Privacy Policy

This privacy policy describes how Hall Labs LLC ("we", "us", or "our") handles information in the Riser paragliding variometer app for Wear OS and its companion Android app (together, the "App"). We are committed to protecting your privacy and being transparent about our practices.

Information the App Accesses

To function as a variometer and flight recorder, the App accesses the following data from your device's sensors while you are using it:

• GPS location — latitude, longitude, altitude, speed, and bearing, used to calculate vertical speed, track your flight path, and record GPS fixes for IGC export.
• Barometric pressure — used to calculate pressure altitude and detect takeoff and landing.
• Activity recognition — used by the Wear OS Health Services API to enable physical button control during active flight sessions.
• Compass (rotation vector) — accelerometer, gyroscope, and magnetometer are combined for heading direction. Used for the compass indicator on the flight screen. Magnetic declination is calculated on-device using Android's GeomagneticField API based on your GPS coordinates.
• Battery status — used to display battery level and activate power-saving GPS intervals.

Information You Provide

The App allows you to optionally enter:

• Pilot name
• Glider type and registration
• Feedback and unit preferences

This information is stored locally on your device and included in IGC flight files that you choose to export. You can change or remove it at any time in Settings.

How Data Is Stored

All data is stored locally on your device:

• Flight tracks and statistics are saved in a local database on the watch.
• Settings and preferences are saved in encrypted local storage on the watch.
• IGC flight files are saved to local storage on the phone after sync.

No data is stored on our servers. We do not operate servers or cloud services for the App.

Data Sharing and Transmission

We do not collect or share your data with Hall Labs or any third party for analytics, advertising, or profiling.

• Flight data syncs from your watch to your paired phone over Bluetooth via the Wear OS Data Layer. This is a direct, encrypted connection between your own devices and does not pass through any external server.
• Live tracking (optional) — if you configure LiveTrack24 or SportsTrackLive credentials in Settings, the watch app sends your GPS position to those services during active flight sessions only. No data is sent when you are not flying. These are third-party services with their own privacy policies, and you choose whether to enable them.
• Elevation API — during armed flight detection, the app may query the Google Elevation API with your approximate GPS coordinates to confirm you are airborne. No personal information is included in these requests.
• You may choose to share or upload IGC flight files from the phone app. This is entirely your choice — the App never uploads flight data automatically.

Third-Party Services

The App does not include any third-party analytics, advertising, crash reporting, or tracking services. Specifically:

• No analytics SDKs (e.g., Google Analytics, Firebase Analytics)
• No crash reporting services (e.g., Crashlytics, Sentry)
• No advertising networks
• No third-party SDKs that collect or transmit user data

The App uses Google Play Services for on-device functionality: location services (GPS), Health Services (button control), the Wear Data Layer (local watch-to-phone sync), and the Google Elevation API (flight detection confirmation). If you enable live tracking, the App connects directly to LiveTrack24 and/or SportsTrackLive using credentials you provide.

Background Location Access

The App requests background location permission to enable two features:

• Active flight tracking — GPS recording continues when the watch screen turns off during flight, so your track is not interrupted.
• Automatic flight detection — when armed via the watch face complication, the App monitors barometric pressure to detect takeoff. GPS is activated to confirm flight conditions and is not recorded until you start a flight session.

Background location data is processed entirely on your device and is never transmitted externally.

Data Retention and Deletion

You are in full control of your data:

• Flight records can be deleted individually from the flight history screen on both the watch and phone apps.
• All app data (flights, settings, preferences) is removed when you uninstall the App.
• Since no data is stored on our servers, there is no remote data to delete.

Children's Privacy

The App is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. The App is designed for paraglider pilots engaging in an adult sporting activity.

Disclaimer

Riser is a recreational flight instrument and is not a certified aviation device. Variometer readings, altitude data, live tracking, and flight detection are provided on a best-effort basis and may be interrupted, delayed, or inaccurate due to GPS signal loss, network connectivity, battery depletion, or device limitations.

Live tracking should not be relied upon as a sole means of safety monitoring or emergency location. Always carry appropriate safety equipment and follow local regulations for your flying activity.

Hall Labs LLC is not liable for any loss, injury, or damage arising from the use of this app or reliance on its data, including but not limited to live tracking availability, altitude readings, or flight detection accuracy.

Changes to This Policy

If we update this privacy policy, we will post the revised version on this page with a new effective date. We encourage you to review this page periodically.
